Camera... Suggestions?

I have been on the lookout for a GOOD camera. Anyone that knows me knows that I L-O-V-E to take pictures. Not just family events and such but pictures of the outdoors, odd and ends, trees, and old buildings... anything that looks good.

I've tested out a couple of cameras and am leaning towards the Nikon D40. BUT, I want to make sure that I get the right kind of camera, one that will last for years to come and continue taking great pictures.

My goal is to join City Daily Photo and become an area photographer. I can't do this with a point and shoot Nikon that jiggles so bad it looks like I'm having seizures.

I am looking at cameras between $400 - $700. This is part of a birthday gift from my family, aren't they sweet?

Give me your suggestions, what kind of camera do you use and how do you like the picture quality and speed?

I NEED SOME HELP! =)

Well, I love taking pictures too but don't have a fancy camera! To be honest I don't even know the name of my camera! LOL! But I just wanted you to know I stopped by to say hi! Have a great day! Good luck finding a camera!

I highly recommend a camera on which the shutter opens automatically, unlike mine....

cheffie-mom - Thanks for stopping by!

Barb - Do you take black pics? lol. I will take your suggestion, I've been known to forget to take the shutter off.

Sometimes they're half-colorful! I think I screwed it up by jamming it in my pocket a lot when I'm outside. My daughter finally got me a case that loops onto my belt, but by then I had already messed up the shutter door (or whatever it's called).

I wish could help, but I'm a terrible picture taker. I can't even remember to clean the lens so my pics aren't blurry. :-p Good luck!

Deb, I'm a bit late on this one, but I got a digital camera for Mothers Day that I absolutely LOOOOOVE!!! It's a Canon PowerShot SD750. I am no expert with cameras, and honestly am TERRIBLE about taking pictures and doing nothing with them. But this one is really easy, takes great pictures and video, and is small enough for me to keep in my purse, so it's always handy. I love that I can edit the pictures if I choose (which I've never done!) and can print out only the ones I want. I would recommend splurging for an extra battery (comes with a charger) and carrying-case.

Have you seen my Hawaii pictures? They were taken with a Nikon D80. I vascillated between the D40 and D80, finally decided to spend the extra cash and by the D80. It's a semi-professional camera and I love it.

I've been getting a lot of feedback regarding the D60 and D80. I'm pretty sure that Nikon is the way to go. I'll have to hold off a little longer if I want the D80... we'll see how patient I am.

Loved the pics on your blog.
